The idea of Japanese gardens began during the Asuka period. Merchants witnessed Chinese gardening techniques, and brought many of them back to Japan with them. Paradise gardens (top right) came about during the late Heian period. These gardens were idealized visions of the world, another one of the beautiful works of japan. Promenade gardens (bottom right) came about during the Edo period. They were designed to compliment houses in the new architectural style and to make use of other nearby scenery, including rivers and mountains.
