Australian Coat of Arms
Physical Map of Australia To the left is a physical map of the Australian continent. The country itself was founded on January 26, 1788 by European settlers. The country is broken up into seven territories; Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania.

The flag of Australia (featured to the right) is composed of three main elements. The Union Jack representing Australia's ties to Great Britian, the Seven Pointed Star representing the seven territories, and the Five Stars representing the group of stars above Australia called the Southern Cross.

Some people, however, have felt that the flag should be changed. They feel that the Union Jack should be removed from the flag and that the new flag should reflect its current status as a fully independent country, respectful of its British history, but projecting through its flag an authentic and modern Australian identity. This ongoing debate has lead to an identity crisis for the country.
