Career Summary

Dentists diagnose and treat problems with people’s teeth, gums, and other parts of the mouth. They provide instructions and advice on taking care of your teeth and gums as well as diets made to improve one’s oral health. Dentist work in an office setting and typically perform many duties throughout the day. Some of these duties are as follows: removing tooth decay, filling cavities, repairing fractured or broke teeth, removing teeth, straightening teeth, placing sealants on teeth, placing whitening agents on teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions, examining x rays, make models, making measurements, and teaching patients about dental care. They also use a variety of equipment such as drills, forceps, and scalpels. Dentist in private practice also perform many administrative tasks like bookkeeping, buying equipment, and hiring other workers such as hygienists and assistants. Some dentists own their own businesses hiring their own staff. However, there are also many dentists who have partners in their practice and some work for established dentists as associates. Most dentists work full time as well. Some work evenings and weekends depending on their patients’ appointments.

Most dental students require at least a bachelor’s degree before entering dental school but these requirements vary by school. Admission to dental schools can be very competitive. These schools often use test and other factors to decide which students to accept into their programs.
As of May 2012 the median annual wage for dentists was $149,310. The lowest 10 percent earned $73,840 and below while the top 10 percent made $187,200 and up. These numbers vary according to location, hours worked, specialty, and the number of years in the practice.
Job Outlook

As for the job outlook the employment of dentists is projected to grow 16 percent from the year 2012 to 2022. Dentists will continue to provide instruction and care aimed at good oral hygiene.
