The Korean People's Army

The Korean People's Army, also known as the Inmin Gun, are the military forces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Until 2011, Kim Jong-il was the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army and Chairman of the National Defence Commission. The KPA has five branches: the Army Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force, the Artillery Guidance Bureau, and the Special Operation Force. The KPA's annual budget is US $6 billion. The US research organization ISIS reports that the DPRK may possess fissile material for some 2 to 9 nuclear weapons. North Korea’s Songun “Military First” policy elevates the KPA to the primary position in the Government and society.

The Korean "Won"

The won is the currency of North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea). It is subdivided into 100 chon. The won is issued by the Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. One hundred North Korean won's (as of December 30th, 2011) is equal to 854 South Korean won's or about 74 cents. North Korean won are intended exclusively for North Korean citizens, and the Bank of Trade issued a separate currency (or foreign exchange certificates) for visitors, like many other socialist states. However, North Korea made two varieties of foreign exchange certificates, one for visitors from "socialist countries" which were colored red, and the other for visitors from "capitalist countries" which were colored blue/green. In recent times, FECs have been largely depreciated in favor of visitors paying directly with hard currency, especially the euro.

The SSO (State Symphony Orchestra)

The SSO was established on 8 August 1946 with the name Central Symphony Orchestra. In January 1947, this orchestra reinforced members and incorporated with the State Arts Theatre following year. They participated not only their subscription concerts but performances of ballets and operas including the first grand opera in Korean peninsula People's Commanders composed by Sun-Nam Kim. SSO (at that time called 'Symphony Orchestra of the State Arts Theatre') became independent in 1956. In 1969, it combined with the Orchestra of the (North) Korean Arts Film Studio and recorded film scores. The SSO incorporated again with the Sea of Blood Opera Company in 1971.

Bibimbap is a signature Korean Dish. The word literally means "mixed meal" or "mixed rice". Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chilli pepper paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating. It can be served either cold or hot.
