Specific knowledge and skills for students and/or nurse aides to assume the role and responsibility required in long-term care is communicated to the student through lectures, lab, and clinical practice. The focus of the course is communication, infection control, safety, residents' rights, and basic nursing skills.

Medical Terminology I AHS-120
Grade: 10-12 Credit: ½ - 1 MaxCred: 1

Prerequisite: Principles of Health Science

An overview designed of the basic techniques of medical word building is provided. Once these techniques have been developed, they can readily be applied to acquire an extensive medical vocabulary. Emphasis is on basic anatomical, physiological, pathology, diagnostic procedures, and pharmacological terms.

CPR for Healthcare Professionals

Prerequisite: Principles of Health Science; Must also have successfully completed or be enrolled in one of the following: Emergency Procedures, Health & Wellness, or Medical Terminology

Comments: Teacher recommendation required.

Emergency Procedures is designed to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Adult/Infant/Child) using current emergency techniques relative to cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, as put forth by the American Heart Association, National Safety Council or American Red Cross. The American Heart Association, National Safety Council or American Red Cross standardized course qualifies a student for certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and safety and first aid.


Principles of Health Science
HEA-102, Workplace Principles WPP-200

Grade: 9-12 Credit: 1 MaxCred: 1

This course is an orientation to the Health Care Industry. It is designed to develop and enhance an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each career major area. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to focus on a career major path and make informed decisions regarding choices for continuing education and/or employment. This course addresses the Kentucky Learner Goals and Academic Expectations, Core Content for Assessment, and includes core components from the National Health Care Skill Standards.(THIS COURSE WAS PREVIOUSLY CALLED INTRO TO HEALTH SCIENCES)

Workplace Principles examine the changing workforce and the skills needed to adapt to constantly changing demands and expectations. The course includes, but is not limited to, problem solving, teamwork, time management, and self-management skills. Job-seeking and job-retention skills are taught through the development of resumes and job search materials. Maximum benefit is received if this course is taken in the latter part of the student's course work.
